Connectionist systems for image processing and anomaly detection
O objetivo principal desta dissertação é estudar as técnicas existentes nestes
(AEs) e Variational Autoencoders (VAEs).
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) have become increasingly present in our daily lives, and the
benefits it has brought to society in recent years are remarkable. The success of AI was driven by the adaptive
capacity that machines gained, and it is closely related to their ability to learn. Connectionist systems, presented
in the form of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), which are inspired by the human nervous system, are one of the
principal models that allows learning. These models are used in several areas, like forecasting or classification
problems, presenting increasingly satisfactory results. One area in which this technology has excelled is Com puter Vision (CV), allowing, for example, the location of objects in images and their correct identification. Anomaly
Detection (AD) is another field where ANNs have been emerging as one technology for problem solving. In each
area, different architectures are used according to the type of data and the problem to be solved. Combining im age processing and the finding of anomalies in this type of data, there is a convergence of methodologies using
convolutional modules in architectures dedicated to AD. The main objective of this dissertation is to study the
existent techniques in these domains, developing different model architectures, and applying them to practical
case studies in order to compare the results obtained in each approach. The major practical use case consists
of monitoring road pavements using images to automatically identify degraded areas. For that, two software
prototypes are proposed to gather and visualise the acquired data. Moreover, the study of ANN architectures
to diagnose the asphalt condition through images is the central focus of this work. The experimented methods
for AD in images include a binary classifier network as a baseline, Autoencoders (AEs) and Variational Autoen coders (VAEs). Supervised and unsupervised practises are also compared, proving their utility also in scenarios
where there is no labelled data available. Using the VAE model in a supervised setting, it presents a excellent
distinction between good and bad pavement areas. When labelled data is not available, using the AE and the
distribution of similarities of good pavement reconstructions to calculate the threshold is the best option with both
accuracy and precision above 94%. The full development process shows it is possible to build an alternative
solution to decrease the operation costs relatively to expensive commercial systems and improve usability when
compared with traditional solutions. Additionally, two case studies demonstrate the versatility of connectionist
systems to solve problems, namely in Mechanical Structural Design enabling the modelling of displacement and
pressure fields in reinforced plates; and using AD to identify crowded places through crowd-sensing techniques
Nova Forum: developing a sme´s strategy go-to-market approach in the non-degree executive education market
This thesis analyses the current panorama of Executive Education for SMEs in Portugal, while identifying a go-to-market strategy to be developed by Nova Forum. Combining the insights given by the existent literature on the topic of executive education and SMEs with first-hand feedback from executives that fit in the targetable market, findings suggest that Nova has a major opportunity to exploit an untapped market. In order to increase its presence and benefit from a first-mover position in the Portuguese market, it is recommended that the school develops and communicates hybrid programs, using online platforms while maintaining its in-person lectures. This should be done through a strategy that includes diversified communication channels and approaches the immediate needs of Portuguese SMEs, particularly internationalization and digitalization
Augmenting High-Level Petri Nets to Support GALS Distributed Embedded Systems Specification
Part 9: Embedded Systems and Petri NetsInternational audienceHigh-level Petri net classes are suited to specify concurrent processes with emphasis both in control and data processing, making them appropriate to specify distributed embedded systems (DES). Embedded systems components are usually synchronous, which means that DES can be seen as Globally-Asynchronous Locally-Synchronous (GALS) systems. This paper proposes to include in high-level Petri nets a set of concepts already introduced for low-level Petri nets allowing the specification of GALS systems, namely time domains, test arcs and priorities. Additionally, this paper proposes external messages and three types of (high-level) asynchronous communication channels, to specify the interaction between distributed components based on message exchange. With these extensions, GALS-DES can be specified using high-level Petri nets. The resulting models include the specification of each component with well-defined boundaries and interface, and also the explicit specification of the asynchronous interaction between components. These models will be used not only to specify the system behavior, but also to be the input for model-checking tools (supporting its verification) and automatic code generation tools (supporting its implementation in software and hardware platforms), giving a contribution to the model-based development approach and hardware-software co-design of DES based on high-level Petri nets
Portugal made a compromise at the end of 2009 with new objectives for an energy policy and established as priority energy efficiency, namely through the implementation of programs for the reduction of energy consumption in public administration and promoting behaviors and choices that minimize energy consumption.
In this context, the main objective of this work is: to contribute to the new energy policy of the Government, through the study of the impact ofnew technologies and new procedures, increasing the efficiency of public lighting.
This dissertation makes an analysis of the existing Public Lighting systems and also the study of technological innovations available on the market. Presented this characterization and based on economic and technical criteria supported by national and international current standards, the solutions that maximize energy efficiency as a whole are identified and proposed for implementation on the ground.
The impact on existing electrical system of the proposed amendments will also be analyzed.
The experimental component of this dissertation was held in the “Parquedas Nações” with the collaboration of Parque Expo – Urban Management of Parque das Nações, S.A., the managing body of the public space of Parque das Nações. The “Parque das Nações” presents itself as a place of undeniable relevance for the aims of this dissertation because: offers a wide variety of solutions in Public Lighting; is within walking distance of the ISEL and works often as technological "showcase" of the country
denominados National Interoperability Frameworks (NIFs).
Initiatives related to electronic government have proliferated in the last decade, both at international
or national level, not only due to saving features that provide but also by the impact they can have on
improving the efficiency and effectiveness of services provided by public administration.
The interoperability among information systems that support the operation of government bodies and the
provision of public services to citizens, both at regional, national and international, have been repeatedly
identified as a key requirement to be able to achieve the desired levels as the operational efficiency and
effectiveness of public administration. For this fact, we have witnessed the development of significant
efforts in many countries all over the globe, concerning the definition of strategies and the creation of tools
aimed at promoting and developing larger and more appropriate levels of interoperability in their public
administrations. One of the most developed and equipped for this purpose are called National
Interoperability Frameworks (NIFS).
Considering this fact, it appears increasingly relevant development tools that allow, in a simple and
appropriate to aggregate the information constituents in these frameworks so as to permit consultation,
comparison and cross according to different perspectives. The creation of an instrument, namely, a web
platform such typology, is one of the goals of this research, along with the entire design of the web
architecture and information architecture that supports the operation of the same and the definition of a
model exploitation.
In developing the information architecture required the previous study of comparative references to
frameworks that allow determining the adoption of a data structure that supports the storage of information
on the NIFs.
The information service developed, called IFPortal and is available online and in the electronic address

(645 mgHCHO/kgbiomassa, base seca e 366 mgCH3CHO/kgbiomassa, base seca).Biomass combustion is an important source of gaseous and particulate pollutants to
the atmosphere, which can cause a variety of environmental and human health
effects.
The purpose of this study was to characterize emissions during domestic biomass
combustion, with a focus on a set of compounds which have received little attention:
the carbonyl compounds, more specifically the aldehydes. Such compounds are
present in the atmosphere through a large number of emissions sources or chemical
reactions, and are well known by the important role they play in the chemistry and
physics of the atmosphere and by their human health effects.
Combustion experiences were performed with wood from four of the most abundant
tree species growing in Portugal (pyrenean oak, maritime pine, blue gum and cork
oak), in order to measure formaldehyde and acetaldehyde emissions, the two
carbonyl compounds that are known to be emitted to the atmosphere in higher
concentrations.
Results show that formaldehyde emission was prevalent over acetaldehyde
emissions whatever the type of burned wood. The highest emission factors were
observed during pyrenean oak combustion experiments (1725 mgHCHO/kgbiomass, dry
basis and 1096 mgCH3CHO/kgbiomass, dry basis) and the lowest emissions factors were
observed during maritime pine combustion experiments (645 mgHCHO/kgbiomass, dry basis
e 366 mgCH3CHO/kgbiomass, dry basis)
